Reading in the New Year

Posted on January 26, 2011May 18, 2013 by Jacky Hackett

Reading more is one of my action items for the year.  Listening to books counts too, I have found audio books to be a great distraction from the horrid boredom on the treadmill.  Really my ultimate goal is to reduce my screen time (laptop, BlackBerry, TV).

Usually I have a long list of books I want to read but when I finished up my stockpile I was struggling to put a new list together.  Luckily a few friends formed a monthly book club so I had the January book selection to get me started.  In the end I did manage to get a few books knocked out.

Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption
by Laura HillenbrandThis is a book I would have never picked up to read, it was our January book club book.  It is such a great book, a truly unbelievable story of surviving.
Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf
by Edward Albee

I have never seen this movie and know nothing about the story.  I mentioned to my parents we were going to see the play , dad just so happened to have a copy and lent it to me.  I am glad I did, I think it will make seeing the play a better experience.

Room: A Novel
by Emma Donoghue

My first library audio book check out!  This was a great selection for it since the majority of the story is told from the perspective of a five year-old boy who has lived his entire life in one tiny room.  An intense but enjoyable listen.

I went from no books to a nightstand full of books.  Here is what I have waiting to be read…
The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot
The Happiness Project: Or, Why I Spent a Year Trying to Sing in the Morning, Clean My Closets, Fight Right, Read Aristotle, And Generally Have More Fun by Gretchen Rubin
Exploiting My Baby: A Memoir of Pregnancy & Childbirth by Teresa Strasser
Best Food Writing 2010 by Holly Hughes
The Next 100 Years: A Forecast for the 21st Century by George Friedman
Better get busy reading.  Any must reads in the new year?

Yes – I love audio and listen to it while I am getting ready in the morning, in the kitchen when I cook and in my car when I drive.

ROOM is so good, I read it but heard it was incredible on audio too.

I have read two books written by Virginia Woolf, and thought they where really good. Very interesting to read about her life aswell on the web. 😉 I never heard of Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf! I hope it's good.

    Have a wonderful Monday!
