Summer Reading Update

Posted on June 29, 2010December 15, 2011 by Jacky Hackett

The weather in the evenings have been perfect for sitting on the front porch and reading.  My daughter and I have been trying to do this every night.  As part of the library reading challenge she needs to get in 30 minutes of reading each day.  As a result I am halfway through my summer…

It’s Officially Summer

Posted on June 1, 2010December 15, 2011 by Jacky Hackett

This essay caught my eye in the New York Times Magazine.  I immediately added the book it was an excerpt from, Orange is the New Black: One Year in a Women’s Prison, to my summer reading list.  It was the first book on my list that I tackled, so Summer had begun for me.  That…

Summer Reading List

Posted on May 13, 2010December 15, 2011 by Jacky Hackett

My nightstand is piled with books again. I am starting to dive in and already enjoying the first read.  Here is what I plan to tackle this Summer.  I’ll need more for the beach trip in August, what are you reading? Orange Is The New BlackMy Year in a Women’s Prison By Piper Kerman The Yellow…

Recent Reads 30 Second Reviews

Posted on April 26, 2010December 15, 2011 by Jacky Hackett

I finally made some progress on my stack of books waiting to be read.  I take advantage of my commute for reading time.  When a book fails to engage me I tend to opt to listen to podcasts instead, then it takes longer than necessary to finish the book.  A sure sign of a great…

Celebrate Every Day!

Posted on April 12, 2010February 23, 2014 by Jacky Hackett

Don’t wait for a special occasion to celebrate, celebrate the every day things too.  It is generally a lot less hectic that way too, rather then waiting for an overblown, over-planned event.  We had a rare weekend with no plans on the calendar (well beside the usual weekend errands).  The weather was nice so we…

My Fifteen Seconds

Posted on March 20, 2010December 15, 2011 by Jacky Hackett

Last year about this time I was picking up my first CSA share of meat from Cedar Valley Farms.  I was very excited to get started with this, but I wish I had been better prepared to be on film.  When I arrived a TV crew was there recording 190 North.  They interviewed and filmed…

In Defense of My Food Budget

Posted on February 19, 2010December 15, 2011 by Jacky Hackett

Reading In Defense of Food gave me a new perspective on the food portion of my budget. Well it gave me a new perspective on a lot of things, the politics behind the food we eat, the real cost of cheap food, eating healthy. In general I battle with the grocery portion of our budget…

Winner Winner, Chicken Dinner

Posted on February 9, 2010November 13, 2020 by Jacky Hackett

To take a line from my husbands’ playbook. Today was a lucky day, even despite not getting a snow day. Well they did close my office early but I couldn’t wrap things up fast enough to take advantage of it. There was only about 6-8 inches of snow by the time I got home, not…

Like it or not, Money = Success

Posted on December 7, 2009December 15, 2011 by Jacky Hackett

I finally finished reading Outliers by Malcom Gladwell.  Gladwell was one of the keynote speakers at a Salesforce conference I attended last year and he spoke about the book.  It took me an embarrassingly long time to get through the book.  I tend to use my commute as my reading time, but lately I have…

End of Season

Posted on November 7, 2009December 15, 2011 by Jacky Hackett

Our final CSA delivery has come and gone.  It was a good season, lots of variety and eggs were included this year too.  My copy of From Aspargus to Zucchinni has yet to let me down on the recipe side.  The latest success was acorn squash stuffed with grilled vegetables and corn bread.  Delicious, even the kids at it…
