Kids in the Kitchen

Posted on October 6, 2010September 7, 2012 by Jacky Hackett

The ten year-old got a new cookbook for her birthday, The Kid’s Cookbook from William Sonoma.  I had the kids go through the book and pick out a few recipes to try.  I didn’t want to he leave the little one out and lead him to think cooking is only for girls, and he was…

Pumpkin and Black Bean Chili

Posted on September 30, 2010October 11, 2020 by Jacky Hackett

I LOVE fall, and everything that comes with it.  Sunny chilly days, changing leaves, crisp apples, Halloween, football, comfort foods, our fall black party.  A chili contest has become something of a tradition at our block party and this year is no exception.  I am on the hunt for a good chili recipe to enter. …

Salsa Verde

Posted on September 21, 2010September 7, 2012 by Jacky Hackett

It feels good to get back in the kitchen!  I was inspired (and finally had time) to take a shot at canning after visiting my brother and sister-in-law’s house.  She had canned cases of fresh tomatoes, greens beans, and beets all that came straight from the farmer.  They sent us home with with one of…

Garden to Table

Posted on September 20, 2010September 7, 2012 by Jacky Hackett

Sunday, I picked all the leeks from the garden. Made this Potato Leek Soup with Poblanos and Crispy Bacon. For the kids, I skipped the poblano and added some shredded chicken. Made for a delicious dinner, very creamy and filing.  Which is good thing since I made a triple batch for freezing. Submitted to Life…

Keep the Doctor Away

Posted on September 18, 2010September 7, 2012 by Jacky Hackett

The first of the apples arrived in the weekly CSA bag.  Two to be exact.  I love the that the leaf is still attached to this one.  Wont be long until we have enough and can enjoy apple and sausage pie.

Cooking Inaction

Posted on September 15, 2010September 7, 2012 by Jacky Hackett

I have not been cooking much at all these days.  Combination of busy, eating out, being fed by others, and a broken dishwasher.  I have had big plans to get some stuff preserved for the winter, but always fall short on time.  Though I did manage to grab a dozen ears of the last crop…

A BLT

Posted on September 1, 2010September 7, 2012 by Jacky Hackett

A as in avocado. Thanks to Lynn at The Actor’s Diet for her suggestion on a new way to put my basil oil to use.  I had some purple onion bulbs to use up; I mixed them with avocado, and the basil oil and smashed it all together.  It was a delicious replacement for the…

Taking Stock {Basil Oil}

Posted on August 30, 2010November 10, 2020 by Jacky Hackett

I hate to see good food go bad.  I saved a bunch of basil from a sad death via the garbage disposal.  We have either been out of town or eating out and have lots of vegetable eating to catch up.  I took inventory of the vegetable crisper and made a plan in an effort…

Peach Bruschetta

Posted on August 28, 2010November 10, 2020 by Jacky Hackett

We hosted a back to school Wagons and Wine in our front yard last night.  Wagons and Wine is our neighborhood version of happy hour.  It was a fun and great opportunity to unwind from a busy first week at school.  For me, it was also an opportunity to put my Michigan peaches to use….

Sweet Heat Treat

Posted on August 23, 2010September 7, 2012 by Jacky Hackett

While I was busy sunning myself on the shores of Lake Michigan, the garden was busy soaking up some sun itself. We came home to an abundance of all variety of tomatoes (finally!), red cabbage and salsa peppers. I’d been waiting to get a large amount of peppers ripe all at once so I could…
